The title might be deceiving to some hence I would like to put it on record that this article is about Zamtel in the world of Telecommunications industry. We have some success stories of the Airtel and MTNs' of our country Zambia but very different when it comes to our very own Zamtel.
For the Sake of simplicity and clarity , Zamtel is has the biggest market advantage compared to the other two giants on the market. This is consistent with the fact that Zamtel has a corporate backing of the entire nation of Zambia, government officials might be used as company agents .
Ministers might mention Zamtel as their perfect example of how well government is trying to make the business environment better for foreign direct investment. Information is power for business and this might score for Zamtel but is it the case?
MTN and Airtel rent most the transmission towers from Zamtel but what is keeping Zamtel behind the friends?
Zamtel is 100% owned by the Zambian Government via IDC which is chaired by the Republican President but before we think further we have Zesco also owned by IDC under the chairmanship of the his Excellence. The two firms can not be compared to effective ventures like zanaco but yes Zamtel can only match up with Unza and CBU which are only existing because of how historical accreditation.
Zamtel just like Zesco has been a hub of Political cadres. They only show up for work when it's politically fit for them to do. The company holds a good number of individual who know nothing about the the company but know everything about political cadres.
While Airtel and MTN hold futuristic ventures that keep them on a profitable track, Zamtel is battling with keeping power for the current government.
What's the way forward??? Let's go the Zanaco way , sell 50% of government control of the Zambian companies to local and indigenous enterprises. Zanaco is 51% owned by private individuals hence the first Zambian bank to hit a 1 billion in revenues.
If HH is futuristic rather than individualistic, sell the Zamtel shares to Zambians with NRCs only then will Zambians be able to compete on the international market
. Sell 50% of Zamtel in order to reduce the political control of this strategic company.
When the private sector owns over 50+1 of a firm, total control remain in private hands hence any change in government doesn't change the government policy on the company. Because with only <49% the government can't appoint political cadres into strategic positions.
Until then , aluta continua .
